On January 11, 2007, Wayne Community College and Mt. Olive College held their Phi Beta Lambda joint induction ceremony of the 2006-2007 officer teams for each chapter.  The event was conducted at 3 pm in Walnut 101 on the Wayne Community College campus.

Officers were inducted by Sarah Espinosa, the PBL Eastern Region Vice President.  A special thank-you goes to here for the help of inducting the officers and for traveling from Fayetteville Technical Community College for the event.

Eleven members, not including those being installed, attended to watch the ceremony as their new officers were being inducted.  The list of inductees included:

Wayne Community College

President:  Christina Fanto
Vice President:  Dustin Gurley
Secretary:  Dana Hine
Historian:  Leanna Greene

Mt. Olive College

President:  Kate Somek
Vice President:  Michelle Knots
Treasurer:  Jeremy Crocker

All-in-all the ceremony went smoothly which is a good sign for the year to come!!!
On Saturday November 11, residents in Wayne County walked together to raise money in support of the March of Dimes efforts to save babies from premature birth. The event was held on Wayne Community College’s campus and hosted by Phi Beta Lambda as our premier community service project. This event not only raises money for the March of Dimes but is a celebration of the year long fund raising efforts of our community. The Goldsboro/Wayne County area raised a total of $18,500 for the March of Dimes in 2006 and our event helped recognize those who contributed to this success.

FBLA-PBL as a national organization has been united with the March of Dimes for nearly 40 years and is consistently ranked as a top fund-raising partner. WayneCC’s chapter of PBL held it’s WalkAmerica event alongside four national FBLA-PBL events spread across the country. National Fall Leadership Conferences were held in Oregon on November 2-3, Ohio on November 9-10, Alabama and New York on November 16-17; each with their own March of Dimes mini-walk.

As the March of Dimes biggest annual fund-raiser, WalkAmerica helps fund the fight against prematurity – a growing crisis that now affects half a million babies born in the U.S. every year.

The number of babies born prematurely each year has increased by 30 percent since 1983. In Wayne County 1 in 7 babies were born prematurely in 2003. Some of those babies die; others face lifelong disability. The money raised in WalkAmerica supports research and programs to find out how to prevent premature births and how to help families who experience it.

“I am proud that Wayne County was one of the thousands of communities nationwide that made WalkAmerica a success,” said Tracey Schmeltzer, Phi Beta Lambda Advisor and WalkAmerica volunteer. “I know we can make an enormous difference in the fight to find out why premature birth happens and what can be done to prevent it. With everyone’s help we move closer to the day when all babies will be born healthy and full term – and more families will know the joy of having a healthy baby,” Tracey said.

For 2006, National WalkAmerica sponsors were CIGNA, Famous Footwear, Farmers Insurance Group, FedEx and Kmart.  Additional national sponsorship is provided by Babyfit.com, Continental Airlines, Discovery Health Channel, First Response, Grain Foods Foundation, Mead Johnson Nutritionals and Outdoor Services.

The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes funds programs of research, community services, education, and advocacy to save babies and in 2003 launched a campaign to address the increasing rate of premature birth. For more information, visit the March of Dimes Web site at marchofdimes.com or its Spanish Web site at nacersano.org.

Eleven Phi Beta Lambda delegates attended the 32nd Annual Fall
Leadership Conference at Mitchell Community College in Statesville, NC.  We
were the largest delegation from the Eastern Region and the third largest
in the state.  We also received Gold Star recognition which is an
annual award given to chapters who have completed the designated
requirements prior to attending the conference.

The conference started out with fun and games. Friday night there was a dance, costume contest, and pizza to go around. When lectures started on Saturday the ghoulish fun continued. Topics included everything from the basics of interviewing skills, the perfect handshake, and resumes into the more in depth process of managing business, parliamentary procedures, and climbing to the top. Other helpful tips included time management and how to tame that pest known as fear.

Three of our members, Christina Fanto, Genesis Juckett, and Josh
Berens, took first place in the Non-Trivia contest which tests the
contestants knowledge of North Carolina Phi Beta Lambda history.

Those in attendance were:

Chris Thomas
Christina Fanto
Dana Hine
Reynold Meraz
Genesis Juckett
Josh Berens
Stephen Twaronzynski
Ashley Jones
